Football Friday Night

Tonight begins the 2012-2013 Football season.  Worthington Kilbourne will play at Olentangy High School and Thomas Worthington will be home against Jonathan Alder High School.

My family will be at Thomas Worthington soaking up the atmosphere.  There is a pre-game tailgate from 5:30-7:30, and Football kicks off is at 7:30 P.M.  The band, the cheerleaders, the lights in the Dow Nelson Athletic Complex.  I love it!

In central Ohio Football is the bell cow.  As football goes people often associate our athletic success.  While we love our football in Worthington, we don’t judge the entire athletic program on football.  Our football teams have struggled a bit in recent years (Coach Trombetti and Coach Gordon are determined to change this and I believe they are the right coaches to make it happen.) However football is one of 18 varsity sports that Worthington offers for boys and girls.

Worthington Schools is in a strong position with its 18 high school sports teams. Additionally, the high school sports program has been ranked among the top five most winning public high school programs in Ohio according to the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Just last year the THWS Girls Field Hockey Team won the State Championship, and the TWHS boys won the 800 and 1600 meter relays at the State Track Meet.  Additionally the WKHS Girls Lacrosse Team played in the State Final Four and the WKHS Boys Soccer Team won the District Title.

The importance of education beyond the classroom has been highlighted in recent years given the growing emphasis on 21st century skills and learning. According to an article in Education Next, “a growing body of research says there is a link between afterschool activities and graduating from high school, going to college, and becoming a responsible citizen.”

Recently we had the Hanover Research Group from Washington D.C. audit and benchmark our co-curricular offerings for students.  In Worthington we value the whole child and the students athletic experience or their experience with the arts if vital to well-rounded success.

This year in Worthington our athletes will compete in the following sports

Bowling, Cross country, Cheerleading, Field hockey, Football, Golf (b/g), Soccer (b/g), Tennis (b/g), Volleyball (b/g), Water polo (b/g), Basketball (b/g), Gymnastics, Ice hockey, Swimming and diving, Wrestling, Baseball, Lacrosse (b/g), Track (b/g), Softball

Tonight you should come out and support our football teams, our marching bands and our cheerleaders.  Tomorrow you may want to check-out a water polo match, a soccer game or a field hockey game.  Our athletes will compete in many sports over the next few days.  They’ll strive for excellence and likely by the end of this year someone in Worthington will add a state championship to the ledger.

Go Wolves!  Go Cards!
