Great People = A Great Organization: Karen Holt

photo[1]Worthington Schools is a large organization. We have close to 9,500 students, 19 schools and over 1,000 employees. It takes a lot of dedicated people to make an organization run. Some of those people, like our teachers, principals and superintendent, are very recognizable publicly. However, none of those people could effectively do their job without a host of dedicated employees working behind the scenes.

One such person who I have the distinct pleasure to work with is Mrs. Karen Holt. Karen works in Human Resources and is responsible for a host of different things. Around the school district she is best known for managing our AESOP system which is the system teachers use to request substitute teachers and which substitute teachers use to select teaching assignments.

Almost every teacher, secretary, and building principal, in our school district has communicated with Karen on the phone or by email. Although many, have never actually seen Karen, or met her face to face.

When I worked in Human Resources I got into a pattern each morning. I would get up around 5:00 A.M and try to work out (sometimes this means doing one arm curls with my coffee cup), and by 6:15 A.M. I would log into our AESOP system from home to see how our substitute teacher situation was shaping up for the day. How many teachers were off sick? Did we have enough substitutes for the day? Karen Holt would already be in the office by 6:00 A.M. and would be working relentlessly to make certain our schools had what they needed for the day. She would be placing substitutes and because she knows both our subs, schools, and staff ,so well, she would be moving substitute teachers around to make sure they were in the best possible place for success.

Organizations are only as good as the people who make them up. Our organization is better because of dedicated employees like Karen who arrive to work before 6:00 A.M. to make certain our schools are ready for our students.

If you’ve talked with Karen Holt on the phone but have never met her, you’re missing out. Stop by our Human Resource office at 200 E. Wilson Bridge Road and introduce yourself. You’ll be glad you did.
